The Eden school can teach your child a little bit of Spanish. It will be a stellar Spanish education compared to other schools. But it will not even come a quarter of the way to getting your child fluent. It is just a warm-up so that if you decide to immerse, it won’t be as much of a shock.
How will it work? We will learn vocabulary
Older children will start to learn how to read Spanish. Spanish is completely phonetic and some Spanish words are spelled like their English counterparts. You can read slowly, and stop to think. So, beginning to read Spanish is achievable.
We transition to acquiring Spanish naturally.
Here is a video to show you what the curriculum will look look like.
At this point we have stopped thinking about trying to learn Spanish. Instead, we are trying to understand a message which is in Spanish.
I’m keeping my eyes peeled for a native speaker to come into the school part-time to talk with the children, read aloud, sing, and play games. That is going to help a lot
When the children are trying to understand messages in Spanish, they are not immersed in Spanish because 3% of your time being in Spanish isn’t being immersed. It is just a drizzle.
It is up to you, to immerse your child, by spending summers in a country where every sign, newspaper, TV show and conversation will be in Spanish. Or you could immerse your family on St. Thomas , as I explained in the foreign language page.
Or you could stay monolingual. That is what almost all English speakers do, and I honestly think that it’s fine. Really.
